The San Francisco School Department built an eight-room frame school facing Minnesota Street, replacing the Potrero School of 1865 at Napa and Kentucky Streets.

An addition facing Tennessee Street. The school was renamed for the superintendent of Union Iron Works, who gave money towards its construction and equipment.

Schoolchildren from the school escorted President McKinley to the laying of the keel of the USS Ohio at Union Iron Works.
Not yet documented: the developer, the early tenants and the date of the last recorded sale. The assessor's roll gives 1900; the 2001 Dogpatch survey dates the Tennessee Street addition to 1895 and the school it replaced to 1877. Submit an update
