    The restaurant that stood here before the Beach Chalet was a wooden Victorian pavilion known as the Swiss Chalet, put up by the architect W. O. Banks.

    Built as the Beach Chalet, a municipal restaurant pavilion in a modified Spanish-Moorish manner and the last design of Willis Polk, who died before it was finished.

    The Beach Chalet holds a group of 1937 Federal Art Project works: Lucien Labaudt's San Francisco Scenes frescoes and monochrome frescoes, a mosaic by Primo Caredio and magnolia-wood carvings of sea creatures by Michael von Meyer. It is City Landmark No. 179.
