    The Fine Arts Building of the California Midwinter International Exposition, designed by the architect C. C. McDougall, was built here — the first of the five building campaigns that made the museum.

    The M. H. de Young Memorial Museum was built to the design of Louis Christian Mullgardt, over 1917 to 1921.

    The museum was expanded by the architects Weeks and Day.

    The 1894 Fine Arts Building was demolished in the course of a central expansion and interior remodelling designed by Frederick H. Meyer.
