   Maud's, the longest-running lesbian bar in San Francisco, traded here from the mid-1960s until 1989 under a no-labels policy; named as potentially eligible for landmark designation for its association with the businesswoman who founded it.

   Among the bar's well-known patrons were the activists Del Martin, Phyllis Lyon and Sally Gearhart and the singer Janis Joplin.

4. 1969

   A visitor found dancing and mixed drinks still barred at Maud's, and a guarded atmosphere about what was allowed.

   A change in California law let women serve alcohol; until then the bar's bartenders had been men.
