280 Divisadero Street

1. 1885

   Built as the personal residence of Charles L. Hinkel, one of five brothers who worked as owner-builders in San Francisco from the 1870s, buying land, building houses and selling them.

2. 1895

   The Charles L. Hinkel House, built by Charles L. Hinkel in an unusual Second Empire manner with a prominent mansard roof; San Francisco Landmark #190.

   The Junior League of San Francisco's Historic Sites Committee photographed the property.

4. 1981

   The upper floor of the carriage house behind the house had been in residential use since some time before 1964; that use was given up around 1981 and the building stood empty from then on.

   Designated City Landmark No. 190, the Charles L. Hinkel House and Carriage House — the house, the carriage house behind it and the whole lot. The house had been rated "3" in the city's 1976 architectural survey and both buildings appear in the Junior League's Here Today (1968).
