Joseph Leonard / Cecil F. Poole House

1. 1911

   Built by Joseph A. Leonard — a Dallas-born architect, engineer and developer who had laid out Ingleside Terraces on the 150-acre site of the old Ingleside race track — as his own house and the showpiece of the city's first suburban "residential park": a shingled Craftsman house with artificial-stone trim on a large lot. Leonard sold the tract's lots under racial deed covenants, among the first in the city.

   Later home to Assistant District Attorney Cecil Poole, who integrated Ingleside Terraces.

6. 1958

   The first African American household in Ingleside Terraces moved in here in 1958, into a tract the developer Joseph Leonard had built for white buyers only; a cross was burned in front of the house shortly afterwards. The building is a designated city landmark.

7. June 5, 1958

   Seven months after the Poole family moved in, a cross was burned in their front yard — a rare overt act of racist harassment in San Francisco, nearly ten years after the Supreme Court had made racial covenants unenforceable. The family stayed for twenty-five years.
