Henry Doelger Building

1. May 1911

   A two-storey-over-basement house clad in rustic wood siding was built at the back of this then-oversized 50-by-100-foot lot, then numbered 348 Judah Street.

2. 1928–1932

   The 1911 house and a one-storey outbuilding at the sidewalk were demolished to clear the site.

3. October 5, 1931

   Henry Doelger bought the 26-by-100-foot lot to build a headquarters and sales office for his growing house-building firm.

4. 1932

   Built 1932. Architect: Charles O. Clausen. The Henry Doelger studio: planning office, sales office, architectural studio and warehouse of builder Henry Doelger, 1932-1950; addition to the west in 1940; from here Doelger planned construction across the Sunset district and his Westlake, Daly City development.

5. January 1932

   The one-storey-with-mezzanine Art Deco headquarters of Henry Doelger Builder Inc. was built, at a cost of $4,000.

6. March 1932

   Doelger designed and built an attached one-storey garage on the east side, its opening copying the stepped entrance of the main building.

7. November 1935

   A vertical blade sign lit with neon lettering reading "Henry Doelger Homes" was put up on the front.

8. 1936

   The roof of the original building was raised and another mezzanine floor put in to make more workshop space, probably toward the rear.

9. 1940

   Built by Henry Doelger.

10. April 20, 1940

    Henry Doelger Builder Inc. opened its enlarged offices, described in the press as streamlined, with indirect lighting, a glass-brick front and soundproof offices.

11. between 1945 and 1951

    The Office of the Assessor-Recorder photographed the property for tax assessment. Cleland Whitton Homes was at the address.

12. 1950

    Henry Doelger Builder Inc. left the building for a temporary office at 375 South Mayfair Avenue in its new Westlake development in Daly City.

13. April 26, 1951

    Henry Doelger sold the building; the new owner, the builder and real-estate developer Cleland Whitton's firm, moved in and let space to an accountant, an insurance broker and an architect.

14. October 1974

    Fire damaged the interior; the damage was repaired under a permit that month.

15. 1980–1989

    A credit union occupied the building, with teller windows cut into the lobby's west wall where the door to Henry Doelger's private office had been.

17. 1986

    The first-floor offices and lobby were remodelled between January and March 1986, changing the bank-teller counters on the west wall and replacing the lobby floor with the present hexagonal tile.
