2501–2593 Sutter Street

1. 1943

   Westside Courts opened in the spring of 1943 with 136 units — four L-shaped and two U-shaped three-storey buildings arranged symmetrically around courtyards holding open space, drying yards and small play areas, with moulded concrete exterior stairs. Lester Hurd and James J. Mitchell designed it, and a 1946 survey of the city's public housing called it the most unusual and interesting design of any San Francisco Housing Authority project. It was the first public housing in the city made available to African Americans. Beniamino Bufano's granite St. Francis on Horseback, carved in 1935, was installed here in 1945.
