1. March 31, 1908

   Harrelson-Grau company contracted for concrete retaining walls for the first St. Mary's Hospital on this block, for the Sisters of Mercy, at $5,155.

2. April 2, 1910

   The first St. Mary's Hospital on this block was designed by D. H. Burnham & Co.: in the mission style with red tile roofs, with three more wings and an administration building to follow. The land, 412 1/2 feet on Hayes and Grove and 275 feet on Stanyan and Shrader, cost $125,000.

3. April 3, 1910

   A builder contracted for the concrete fireproofing and cement work of the first St. Mary's Hospital, on the corner of Hayes and Stanyan streets.

4. August 8, 1968

   St. Mary's Hospital owned the land on both sides of Grove Street between Stanyan and Shrader Streets; the hospital held 433 beds in buildings including ones built in 1952 and 1960. St. Mary's Hospital had recently built a parking garage intended for its employees, charging 50 cents an hour and closing at 10:30 P.M. The City Planning Commission approved, with nine conditions and on a 4 to 1 vote, the expansion of St. Mary's Hospital to a medical center of up to 630 beds, with a nursing tower of no more than nine stories above a two-story base built partly over vacated Grove Street.
