San Francisco Gas Light Company Headquarters

1. 1891–1893

   Built in 1891–93 as the headquarters of the San Francisco Gas Light Company's new gasworks on three waterfront blocks bought in 1884, a plant hailed on completion as the most modern in the country; its design is credited to the company's president, Joseph B. Crockett. The building held the offices in front, the plant manager's quarters upstairs and two large gas compression cylinders at the back, cooled with bay water whose warm outflow made Gas House Cove a popular swimming place. It is the only building of the gasworks left.

2. 1893

   The San Francisco Gas Light Company put up its headquarters here in 1893, alongside two large gas holding tanks that stood until the Marina was built out. The tanks are gone; the office building is San Francisco City Landmark No. 58.

3. December 11, 1896

   The company merged with Edison Light and Power to form the San Francisco Gas & Electric Company, absorbed by Pacific Gas & Electric in 1905; from 1906 the building was used only to store company records, until it was sold in the mid-1950s.

4. September 20, 1973

   The City Planning Commission unanimously approved designating the Merryvale Building as a City Landmark.
