Built by the Market Street Railway as a steam powerhouse, heavy timber framed and brick, generating electricity first from coal and later from oil. The oldest surviving non-residential building in the Showplace Square survey area.

During the 1907 streetcar strike, one of the earliest outbreaks of violence in the district took place outside the powerhouse doors, when armed strikebreakers fired on strikers.
