Before 1906 the site held the Southern Pacific Hospital; the armory replaced the city's armory at Page and Gough Streets, burned in the 1906 fire, and a temporary one at Van Ness and California.

The State Armory and Arsenal was built of clinker brick in rough red and brown, its walls curving outward towards the ground, with long slit windows and four octagonal corner towers, in the manner of a mediaeval fortress.

Built by the contractors McLeran & Peterson to the design of the architects Woollett & Woollett, who had presented the plans in December 1911.

The National Guard, housed here for most of the building's life, moved out.

The State-owned National Guard Armory held a boxing training room, a billiards room, a swimming pool that had been filled with concrete, a wood-panelled meeting room and a drill room with about one acre of floor space; only the boxing room was open to the public.

1978
The armory was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an outstanding example of the metropolitan armories built in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It is San Francisco Landmark No. 108.
