  1. 1947

    Shaff's furniture store was rebuilt as a three-storey reinforced-concrete building on the foundation and side walls of its one-storey predecessor, with the showroom and a mezzanine at the front and a furniture-repair shop at the back on Osage Alley.

  2. March 6, 1977

    The Mission Cultural Center opened in the old Shaff's building, which the City had bought for $400,000 after a campaign by the neighbourhood's artists for a Latino arts centre of their own; more than two thousand people came to the opening, a Mass said by the Nicaraguan poet and priest Ernesto Cardenal, who baptised children on the spot.

    Galería Museo, the centre's gallery, opened with the Sixty-three Show of sixty-three works.

  4. 1982

    Carlos Loarca, with Manuel Villamor and Betsie Miller-Kusz, painted Spirit of the Arts, a 3,700-square-foot mural across the Mission Street front showing the work going on inside; its making was filmed as the documentary Anatomy of a Mural, and Loarca and Miller-Kusz restored it in 2017.

  5. October 1984

    A renovation designed by Rosekrans and Droder, Inc., finished in January 1987, replaced the original storefront, built a theatre with a stage and dressing rooms, filled in the mezzanine for gallery space and made seismic repairs.
