The Sears, Roebuck store at Army and Mission Streets stood abandoned; Mission groups proposed it as a site for a University of California dental clinic.

February 3, 1977
The building, with 45,000 square feet on the ground floor, 40,000 on each of the two floors above and 99 parking spaces off Valencia Street, stood vacant; it had been a Sears Roebuck store.

March 24, 1977
The ground floor of the former Sears store was to become offices of the State Employment Development Department, a government use the Acting Director approved as beyond local zoning; the request to store household goods upstairs had been withdrawn.

April 21, 1977
By 21 April 1977, the Board of Permit Appeals had upheld the permit for the State Employment Development Department to occupy the former Sears store, over the Mission Planning Council's opposition.
