1886
The hospital had become a fully operating one on this site by 1886, three decades before the brick buildings that stand along Potrero Avenue now.

1915
Five hospital buildings — a three-storey central administration block flanked by pairs of six-storey wards — were completed in the Neo-Italianate Renaissance style, with patterned brick, terra cotta and marble trim, to the design of Newton J. Tharp. The grounds were landscaped by John McLaren.

The five- to ten-foot brick retaining wall with its decorative wrought iron fence, which defines the hospital's Potrero Avenue edge, dates from this year.

1932
Building 80/90, the hospital building closest to the skilled nursing facility site, was built in the Art Deco style to the design of Martin Rist.

1935–1941
The Works Progress Administration repaired and rehabilitated several buildings on the hospital campus — the nurses' home, the administration building and the pathology, emergency and receiving buildings.

The later of the two groups of five- and six-storey brick buildings that survive on the hospital site dates from this year; by 2005 they held offices and research space.

The seven-storey Main Hospital building was built, and the initial study records that it is not rated as a historic resource.

1976
The eight-storey concrete Main Hospital, set back about 200 feet from 23rd Street, was built in the New Brutalist manner.

San Francisco General Hospital, where Ward 5B opened in July 1983 as the first dedicated inpatient AIDS ward in the world, staffed by eleven nurses and two unit clerks who volunteered. Identified as potentially eligible for landmark designation.
