    Built as the church of St. Charles parish, carved out of the older Mission, St. Patrick's and St. Joseph's parishes, to designs by Charles J. I. Devlin, and dedicated on 28 May.

    The parish built a new church on South Van Ness Avenue, and the old church, a school as well since about 1895, became wholly a school, run by the Sisters of the Holy Cross — their only school in the city — with up to 400 pupils.
