1000–1010 Broadway

The first house on Russian Hill stood here: built in 1853 by the building contractor Charles Homer, who that year bought the whole block between Broadway, Taylor, Vallejo and Jones. The architect William Ranlett, one of Homer's two partners, is believed to have designed it along with the two other houses that went up on the block the same year. It was demolished in 1910, and the site was still vacant a century later.

Broadway was not graded until the early 1890s, and the retaining wall built along it then — the Parker-Atkinson Retaining Wall — still forms the southern boundary of this lot. It is a contributing element of the Russian Hill/Vallejo Street Crest District, which credits the hill's retaining walls both as engineering and landscape work and for their part in holding back the fire of 1906.
