Charles Crocker bought the Sacramento Street side of the block — where the hatters Robert and Ross Adams had once had a porched frame house — and put up a retaining wall, a groom's house, stables and a conservatory, all lost in 1906.

The Charles Crocker mansion, for which twelve small houses had been bought to assemble the lots, was completed on this block.

Designed by William F. Curlett. With Maxwell Bugbee, Samuel Bugbee and Walter Cuthbertson. The building was demolished in 1906.

Every structure on the block except the Crocker Fence was destroyed in the fire that followed the earthquake. The fence, of about 1877, is the oldest feature of City Landmark No. 170.

George Bodley's plan for the cathedral property, which would have put the main facade on California Street, set the position of the Cathedral House built five years later.

Retaining walls for the first cathedral plan were built on the Sacramento Street side of the close.

The Healy-Tibbitts Construction Company contracted for earth and rock excavation on the west side of the block for the Grace Cathedral corporation, priced by the cubic yard.

The four-storey Cathedral House, known as Gibbs Hall, was completed on the Taylor Street side of the cathedral close, its facade and decorative elements of limestone block, to the design of Lewis Hobart. It was rated “3” in the 1976 city inventory and included in the Here Today survey.

Lewis Hobart's revised plan turned the cathedral to face Taylor Street and envisaged removing the Cathedral House and part of the Crocker Fence for a staircase to the main entrance.

Construction of the cathedral began, to Lewis Hobart's plan of 1926. The building is part of City Landmark No. 170.

The two-storey Diocesan House, also by Lewis Hobart, was built on the Taylor Street side of the close, immediately north of the Cathedral House.

Grace Cathedral, picketed on 26 September 1965 by about thirty demonstrators protesting the Episcopal Diocese's curtailment of a canon's duties over his support for gay and lesbian rights; in 1976 it hosted part of the Conference on Violence Against Women.

The Cathedral School for Boys, 1965, by George T. Rockrise; part of the Grace Cathedral Close landmark, it was designated in 1984 at the age of eighteen.

The Cathedral School for Boys, founded in 1957 as the first Episcopal cathedral boys' school west of Washington, D.C., dedicated its building on the close, designed by George Rockrise and William J. Watson under Le Corbusier's influence, set low into the hill with a rooftop playground; a time capsule of the school's history was buried on the site.
