St. Luke's, then the largest Episcopal parish on the Pacific Coast, moved its twice-enlarged wood-frame Carpenter Gothic church here from Pacific Avenue and enlarged it again.

1900
The second church on the site was consecrated: Albert Sutton's Romanesque-inspired building of brick faced in rough blue-grey sandstone, designed in 1898 and seating nearly a thousand.

Sutton's church, damaged in the earthquake, was destroyed when the Army dynamited it with its neighbours along Van Ness Avenue to make a firebreak.

The vestry accepted Benjamin Geer McDougall's design for a steel-frame Late Gothic Revival church faced in sandstone, over a scheme by Sutton & Weeks — the only church in this style among the city's fifteen surviving Episcopal parish churches.

1911
The Resurrection window over the altar was installed, the first of 29 windows by the English firm Heaton, Butler & Bayne put into the church over the next 39 years.

June 25, 1936
The soft sandstone of the Van Ness and Clay Street fronts, badly spalled, was covered in cement plaster scored to look like stone, by the contractor Frank E. Cornell for $2,000.

1949
The Te Deum window, by the English firm J. Wippell & Co., was set into the great west window, which had held clear glass since the church was built.

1952
A two-storey reinforced-concrete parish house by Ward & Bolles was built beside the church at 1755 Clay Street, with rooms for a church school and a rooftop play area in place of a planned third storey; its lot was merged with the church's in 1953.

After the Loma Prieta earthquake, steel columns and beams and tie rods were added to reinforce the organ loft and tie the aisle walls to the nave, taking the church off the city's unreinforced masonry list.
