The $900,000 James Denman Junior High School campus — an academic building, a shops building and a gymnasium — was built here with Public Works Administration funding to designs by Albert F. Roller and William P. Day in the PWA Moderne style, and completed in 1940. Begun as Outer Mission Junior High, it was renamed while under construction in 1939. The auditorium came in 1961.
The city's New Deal survey addresses James Denman Junior High School at 241 Oneida Street, and describes it as standing at the southeast corner of Oneida and Delano avenues; the city's address registry has only Oneida Avenue.
