2622 Jackson Street

1. 1894–1895

   Built for George W. Gibbs, one of California's leading producers of iron and steel and a philanthropist, to designs by Polk & Polk (Willis Polk), with public rooms scaled to a civic leader, and a caretaker's cottage at 2620 Jackson by the same firm; it was the first building on the site. Gibbs, who had built it on retiring at seventy, died within a month of moving in, and his family gave Gibbs Hall at Grace Cathedral in his memory.

2. 1900

   Built.

3. before 1941

   After Gibbs's death the house was sold to the Japanese government as its consulate; after Pearl Harbor it was taken over by the Red Cross, and in 1947 it was bought by the Institute of Music and Art as a school of music, drama and opera.
