2066 Pine Street

1. c. 1876–1878

   Built as a single-family Italianate town house by William Simon, a carpenter and builder who owned but never lived in it and had the water connected on September 17, 1876, in the years the Western Addition was filling with rows of middle-class houses; its number was then 2026 Pine.

2. 1900

   Built by William Simon.

3. 1921

   The Mme. C.J. Walker Home for Girls opened here in 1921, run by the Walker Club: lodging and job referrals for African American women new to the city, with a social hall and large kitchen used for community gatherings. It ran until 1972, when it moved to Hayes Street.

4. 1926

   The Walker Home turned the basement into a social hall for its own gatherings and for the banquets and dinners of the city's Black clubs, among them the Beauticians Club.

5. 1941

   The Walker Home stuccoed the facade and put in terrazzo front stairs.

6. 1972

   The Madame C.J. Walker Home for Girls and Women occupied this Italianate row house until 1972, offering young Black women lodging, employment counselling and a place to gather.

7. 1999

   The 1941 stucco was removed and the facade restored to its nineteenth-century Italianate appearance, its missing stair railings, portico, window trim and cornice remade.

8. June 1999

   Designated a City of San Francisco landmark in June 1999 as the Madame C.J. Walker Home for Girls and Women, and the only designated residence in the Japantown survey area with a recorded tie to the Japanese American community.
