Chambers Mansion

1. 1887

   Built to designs by J. C. Mathews & Son as the San Francisco house of R. C. Chambers, the Utah mining industrialist; it was the first house built in its row, set on unusually large grounds.

   The architect Houghton Sawyer added the west tower, and the house was moved ten feet east.

   On the owner's initiation, the City Planning Commission proposed, 5-0, that the Board of Supervisors designate the Chambers Mansion a city landmark (Resolution 8554); a companion request to use it as a 16-room hotel, The Mansion, and the home of the Bufano Society of the Arts was continued.
