1. July 9, 1910

   The San Francisco Turnverein chose Emil Neumarkel's design, to be modified, for its new hall: three storeys and basement of brick with a steel frame on an 84:3 by 137:6 lot, with a gymnasium, plunge, showers and two bowling alleys below, an auditorium or ballroom on the second floor and a meeting hall with library and reading room on the third, estimated at $50,000.

2. October 15, 1910

   The San Francisco Turnverein borrowed $68,500 to start construction of its new hall.

3. December 3, 1910

   A class C building permit was issued this week for the San Francisco Turnverein's clubhouse.

4. 1911

   Completed in the autumn of 1911 as Turn Verein Hall for the San Francisco Turn Verein, a German gymnastics society, to a design by Emil A. Neumarkel: four floors including a basement, a Baroque façade, a ballroom and a stage. It was renamed Sciots Hall before 1939 as anti-German feeling grew.

5. May 18, 1940

   Bought by the Consolidated Committee of Russian National Organizations for $30,000 and opened as the Russian Center on 18 May 1940 before thousands of people. It has housed Russian community organisations, festivals and performances since; the Museum of Russian Culture opened in it in 1948, the Russkaia zhizn newspaper has had its offices and press here since 1942, and retrofitting after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was funded by community donations.
