The auditorium at Portola Junior High School was built in 1939 with Public Works Administration funding and dedicated on 1 November that year. George Applegarth designed it in a stripped classical manner for $68,000, after the Board of Education cut a $280,000 auditorium-and-gymnasium scheme back to the hall alone. It is the only surviving part of the 1925 campus, which Barnard J. Joseph and Louis S. Stone had designed in the Mission Revival style.
