The 1913 wood-frame school here was cut down and rebuilt under the Public Works Administration after the 1933 Field Act tightened seismic standards. Gardner A. Dailey and Wilbur D. Peugh designed the work — the third floor removed, and a reinforced-concrete classroom wing and entrance pavilion added at the 19th Street corner in the Late Moderne style with a little Art Deco ornament over the door. The rest of the timber school came down in the early 1950s and was replaced by a matching concrete wing. The campus now houses Downtown High School.
