   Built as a wedding present, three storeys over a basement of timber frame on the northwest corner of Jackson and Locust Streets: Bernard Maybeck's own theatrical reading of the Tudor style, half-timbered with Gothic tracery, with light fixtures, furniture and fire irons he also designed. Three years after the earthquake it was set on an unusually deep foundation of timber piles driven into the hillside, its loads calculated by Maybeck's engineer Herman Kower.

4. July 30, 1910

   Leon Roos and his wife had lately moved into the new house. Its great living room, 19 feet high, 50 long and 25 wide, was built in the form of a chapel with a massive stone mantel; the house stood on piers 25 feet deep, its red oak front door carried the Roos initials on a gold escutcheon, and most of its furniture came from Europe. Mrs. Roos had worked out the plan, which Maybeck & White drew.

5. 1913

   Bernard Maybeck enclosed the ground-floor balcony at the rear as a sitting room off the living-room alcove, the first of several changes he made to his own design.

   The Leon L. Roos House at 3500 Jackson Street was in use as a single-family residence; the zoning would have allowed its conversion to three units. The City Planning Commission unanimously approved the proposal to designate the Leon L. Roos House at 3500 Jackson Street as a City Landmark, on the recommendation of the Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board.
