Verdier Mansion

1. 1905–1906

   Four-storey stuccoed mansion, now flats, designed by Houghton Sawyer for a Western Pacific Railroad executive; its own retaining wall and terrace wrap the Taylor Street corner.

2. 1907

   Built.

3. 1919–1953

   Bought by Paul Verdier of the City of Paris department store, who kept it until 1953; the house is still called the Verdier Mansion.

4. 1924

   A Russian tea room opened here in 1924 in a space adjoining the Hillcrest Club, decorated with the proprietor's own Russian-themed paintings; it stayed until the early 1930s and inspired a 1927 Hillcrest Club play.
