    Shareholders of the California Flower Market raised the assessment on vendors and used the funds to buy a lot at 5th and Brannan streets, the future home of the market.

    The San Francisco Flower Terminal opened, mayor George Christopher presiding — a three-acre complex of two principal warehouses and a mall of storefronts, designed by master architect Mario Ciampi so that the California Flower Market, the San Francisco Flower Growers and the Peninsula Flower Growers could share the site while staying as autonomous as possible. It was then the largest wholesale flower terminal in the United States and remains one of only four. It replaced a pipe yard, an auto truck yard and a scrap metal works that the U.S. Navy had leased during the Second World War.
