   St. Joseph's parish was founded by the Rev. Hugh Gallagher under Archbishop Alemany.

   Built.

5. 1913

   Saint Joseph's Church, dated 1913. Its congregation, largely Irish in the early 20th century, became increasingly Mexican and Filipino by the middle of the century. The parish moved to Saint Patrick's after the 1989 earthquake and the church is now closed.

6. 1913

   The existing St. Joseph's Church complex — two churches, a school, convent, and rectory — was under construction in 1913 and rededicated in 1914, designed by architect John J. Foley, replacing the parish's earlier churches (1861, 1865) destroyed in the 1906 Earthquake and Fire.

7. April 1913

   The cornerstone of the present Neo-Romanesque church, designed by John Foley, was laid. The parish was first Irish, and later chiefly Filipino.

8. September 30, 1913

   Herman Bosch and the Atlantic Fireproofing Company contracted for the exterior and interior plaster and cement work, plaster ornament and metal furring of the archdiocese's new brick-and-steel church on the corner, at $17,085.

10. October 11, 1980

    A marble shrine built to house the Santo Niño was dedicated as the National Shrine of Filipinos in the United States.

    St Joseph's Church was listed individually on the National Register in 1982 and was rated 3 in the 1976 citywide architectural survey, the only rated property among fifty in the neighbourhood.
