    Lawton Elementary School was rebuilt in concrete here with Public Works Administration funding, replacing the temporary bungalows that had served the central Sunset since the 1920s. Charles E. J. Rogers, Mario Ciampi and Dodge A. Reidy designed the Late Moderne campus: an 18-classroom academic building completed in 1935, with the auditorium and kindergarten wing following in 1939. The $320,000 school was dedicated on 20 October 1939, and gained a matching two-storey north addition in 1950.
