245–257 Hyde Street

1. 1930

   One of the two interconnected Art Deco buildings known together as the Film Exchange Building, built in reinforced concrete in 1930, two storeys, with Art Deco fronts to Hyde and Eddy Streets. Heritage rated the pair "B" for major importance in its 1981 survey, the 1976 citywide survey rated them "3", and they contribute to the San Francisco Apartment Hotel Historic District.

2. 1930

   Built as the 20th Century Fox, film exchange, to the design of the architects O'Brien Brothers and W.D. Peugh. Two storeys, composition of two parallel facades, Moderne ornamentation.

3. 1931

   The second of the two interconnected buildings, at 245-249 Hyde Street, followed in 1931.

4. 1931

   Built as Gaumont British Picture Corporation of America and 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, to the design of the architects O'Brien Brothers and W.D. Peugh. Two storeys, Moderne style.

5. 1969

   A recording engineer expanded his operation from Hollywood into a San Francisco studio here in 1969.

6. 1973

   Wally Heider Studios, now Hyde Street Studios, where Herbie Hancock recorded Head Hunters and Sextant in 1973, the Pointer Sisters Steppin' in 1975, Ramsey Lewis Salongo in 1976 and Curtis Mayfield Do It All Night in 1978. Identified in 2024 as eligible for local landmark, California Register or National Register designation.

7. 1979

   The Tenderloin Clinic, run by the Department of Public Health with openly gay staff, one of five programmes operated by the private mental health organisation Urban Mental Health.
