The Alcazar Theater, built in 1911 and demolished in 1961, stood here and was the centre of Federal Theatre Project activity in San Francisco from 1935 to 1939, with offices, costume shops, rehearsal space and a research library. The project's national director called it the best-equipped Federal Theatre plant under one roof in the country.
