Produce Building
2095 Jerrold Avenue
-
1925
The site was originally tidal marshland along Islais Creek; state legislation in 1925 created the Islais Reclamation District, which filled the marshlands to form the industrial district. The ground holds up to about 19 feet of fill, probably placed after the 1906 earthquake and fire and containing debris from it.
-
1940s
Before the present market facility, the site held four large warehouses owned and operated by the United States Marine Corps; large commercial and industrial warehouses stood here from the 1940s onward.
-
1963
The market's four main warehouses — Buildings K, L, M and N — were built for the San Francisco Wholesale Produce Market: steel-frame, metal-sided structures 27.5 feet tall with office mezzanines, together with three dock and staging pavilions of the same campaign.
-
1963
The Produce Building, the market's three-story reinforced-concrete office building with a ground-floor branch bank, went up at the southeast corner of Toland Street and Jerrold Avenue.
-
1981
The Cash & Carry building, a one-story light-steel-frame warehouse clad in corrugated steel, was built at the northeast corner of Toland and Jerrold.
-
December 2005
A 10,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tank was removed from the market site near the corner of Rankin Street and Jerrold Avenue under health-department and fire-department supervision; the tank was holed, and the excavation showed petroleum odors and stained soil, with gasoline and benzene detected in the groundwater.

May 2010
A historical resource evaluation found all twelve buildings on the market site — the four 1963 warehouses, the dock pavilions, the Produce Building, the Cash & Carry building and 901 Rankin Street — ineligible for the California Register individually or as contributors to a potential historic district, and therefore not historical resources under CEQA.
