The Bayview Neighborhood Community Center was founded here. It began as the Crispus Attucks Club, named for the Revolutionary War patriot, and became an important cultural centre for the district's African American community, giving space to public meetings, job training and counselling, games and activities for young people, and arts and crafts programmes. It moved to the South San Francisco Opera House around 1966.
