Built as Queen Anne flats for John W. McCormick, whose family had sat out the long depression of the 1890s in the cottage next door at 4038, as soon as the building boom began: designed by Kidd & Anderson (John T. Kidd) and built by Frank Demartini & Brothers, in redwood siding and shingles, with patent-stone entrance steps and an onion dome on its eastern tower.

The house with the onion dome survived the 1914 Twin Peaks Tunnel works that cleared its neighbours, and an Article 10 landmark designation was initiated for it in 1999.
