The German General Benevolent Society opened the German Hospital on this block, a 200-bed wood-frame building in the German Rundbogenstil on a campus of grass, palms and shrubs. A women's wing followed in 1888.

The site had been in health-care use for 110 years by 1991, placing the first hospital use here in about 1881.

November 23, 1906
Cyclops Iron Works, Pacific Coast Cork Insulating Company and New Century Dish Washing Machine Company contracted for a refrigerating and ice-making plant at the German Hospital, which then stood on this block, at $3,780.

The original hospital was replaced by a five-storey brick complex facing 14th Street, renamed Franklin Hospital during World War I.

Work began on the medical centre buildings then standing, and every building, fence and roadway of the earlier hospital was razed for them.

The board launched a $12 million campaign to rebuild the aging campus with two towers and an office building at the northwest corner of the site.

The three new buildings were completed and the old Franklin Hospital demolished; the hospital was renamed Franklin Medical Center.

September 7, 1972
The site proposed for a ground-level helicopter landing pad was the Ralph K. Davies Medical Center (Franklin Hospital) parking lot on 14th Street. Franklin Hospital, the Ralph K. Davies Medical Center, owned and occupied an entire square block, on which it had recently rebuilt its facilities, with its emergency operating rooms on the ground floor. The City Planning Commission approved, for a six-month trial period and with additional conditions, a conditional use for an emergency helicopter service at Franklin Hospital.

September 14, 1972
The City Planning Commission ruled that the hospital's six-month helipad authorization would run from the completion of the helipad, and asked the hospital to proceed promptly.

January 12, 1978
The City Planning Commission certified the final environmental impact report for the expansion of Ralph K. Davies Medical Center (Resolution 7879) and then unanimously disapproved its conditional use application to add a fifth floor to the hospital for enlarged executive offices (Resolution 7880).
