   The two-story stucco building, with ground-floor storefronts, angled bays and a red clay-tile parapet, was built.

2. 1982

   The Kaposi's Sarcoma Research and Education Foundation - later the San Francisco AIDS Foundation - opened here in 1982, the first agency in the city specifically addressing the new disease. Identified as potentially eligible for landmark designation.

3. 1982

   A few months after activist Cleve Jones, approached by Dr. Marcus Conant, launched the Kaposi's Sarcoma Research and Education Foundation from folding tables at 18th and Castro, the group opened its first office in a tiny back room here, running a volunteer-staffed referral and information hotline whose unlisted number rang constantly.

4. 1983

   The San Francisco AIDS Foundation, founded by Cleve Jones and first run from folding tables at the corner of 18th and Castro streets, opened its first brick-and-mortar space here.

   The foundation's offices drew national attention when a Florida hospital flew a critically ill AIDS patient to San Francisco and left him at the organization's front door.
