Built on the corner lot, then moved

Fernando Nelson built the house on what is now the site of 709 Castro Street, part of his large corner lot at Castro and 20th, where the undeveloped portion was raised behind a stone retaining wall and held a garden and a fountain fed by a spring on the site. By 1950 the house had been moved to its present position to make way for a single-storey wood-frame garage on the original site; the garage was later demolished and the house raised over basement garages.

Put forward as a potential San Francisco Landmark for its association with Fernando Nelson, who built more than 4,000 houses in San Francisco over a career of seventy years, and as a distinctive example of Queen Anne architecture. Nelson ran part of his building business from the house, keeping a workshop and lumber storage on the lot behind it and work horses in basement stables. The statement is reconnaissance-level and says inclusion in it is not a judgement on a building's worthiness for preservation.
