The owner bought a seventeen-acre parcel near Douglass and Caselli and, dissatisfied with the water available, built a holding basin, pumping engine, storage dam and boiler near the house and ran a rival water company supplying local residents. The Board of Health condemned the wells as unfit for domestic use in 1891, and supply to Eureka Valley and Clarendon Heights ended in 1893.

Built 1891–1892 on the 8.65-acre Johnson, Ellis, & Burke subdivision, at 78 by 107 feet more than twice the size of most lots in the neighborhood.

Occupied as a hospital, 1896–1909, then converted to apartments; known as the Victor Apartments by 1913 and leased by Standard Oil for employee housing during the Second World War. It was the only apartment building in the neighborhood on the 1914 Sanborn map, with fourteen units.

The California Medical College ran the house as the Maclean Hospital and Sanitarium; the College of Physicians and Surgeons of San Francisco took it over in 1901 and ran it as California General Hospital, and by 1906 it was in use as the Jefferson Hospital.

Recently vacated by the Maclean Hospital, the building was pressed back into use as a temporary hospital and relief centre after the earthquake and fire.

1 nominal $1 street-space permit and 5 expired permits are omitted. The assessor's roll gives 1885; the 2017 Corbett Heights context statement dates the building to 1891.
