   Cleve Jones founded the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, with offices at this address.

   From this storefront the NAMES Project, formally organised in 1987, rallied volunteers working on donated sewing machines to make three-by-six-foot quilt panels; first shown as forty panels in 1987, the quilt had grown to nearly 2,000 panels four months later. The building remained a place of pilgrimage until the quilt moved to Atlanta in 2001. A designated San Francisco landmark (No. 241).

6. June 1987

   Cleve Jones, who had made the first panel of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in 1986 in memory of his friend Marvin Feldman, gathered a small group in this storefront to organise the NAMES Project. Panels arrived from across the country; the Quilt had 40 panels at that month's Freedom Day Parade and 1,920 at its first display on the National Mall on October 11, 1987.

7. 1993–2001

   With nearly 30,000 panels the Quilt outgrew the storefront and moved to 310 Brannan Street; 2362 Market became the NAMES Project's visitor and volunteer centre, where people came to sew and to see a loved one's panel privately, until the Project moved to Atlanta.
