The Phoenix Brewery, the earliest documented commercial brewing operation in Eureka Valley, was founded here; ale, malt extract and stout were made on the site, with a brew house and keg sheds arranged along the north side of the lot. Part of the brewery was reportedly damaged in the 1906 earthquake, and by 1910 the former brewery was in industrial use as an ornamental iron works.

Ruby's Clay, an art cooperative founded in Hayes Valley in 1962 by the ceramic artist Ruby O'Burke (1897-1983), moved into the former brewery building with the help of the artist Ruth Asawa and her family, with studio and exhibition space below.

Put forward as a potential San Francisco Landmark, with the Kirby House, for its association with the early history of brewing and industrial production in Eureka Valley and as an example of a small-scale brewery complex, and separately as a distinctive example of a small-scale commercial brewing building of the late nineteenth century. The statement gives the brewery building as 552 Noe Street in a figure caption and in its social and political life framework and as 560 Noe Street in its industrial production framework. It is also put forward as possibly eligible for the California Register for its association with Ruby O'Burke's arts education work in San Francisco, 1962-1983.
