1001 Front Street

1. 1893

   The block between Battery, Front, Green and Commerce Streets held a string of connected warehouses — Cunningham's Warehouse, the American Sugar Refinery Company's and a saloon — whose walls were by then out of plumb. They were pulled down before 1906.

2. 1905

   A glass warehouse and mirror factory built for W. P. Fuller and Co. — the one important building to come out of George Alexander Wright's short-lived partnership with Willis Polk.

   Built.

4. 1907

   Finished in the autumn, after the earthquake fire had damaged it while under construction: a glass and mirror works for W. P. Fuller & Company, with a twelve-arch Green Street front, a wagon drive through the middle, and a ground floor tall enough for State Belt Railroad freight cars to be shunted in from Front Street.

5. 1964

   The railway entrance at the north end of the Front Street front was closed and a pedestrian entrance put in its place, and a mezzanine of offices was built into the tall first floor.

6. April 1967

   KMPX, the first underground radio station — playing whole albums rather than top-forty singles — began broadcasting from here in April 1967 and influenced the founding of dozens of stations across the country. Its March 1968 staff walkout, announced on air over low wages, drew crowds outside and a flatbed-truck performance by sympathetic musicians.

7. 1970

   The wagon drive through the ground floor from Green Street to Commerce Street was enclosed as an entrance lobby.

   The glazing was taken out of the Battery Street arches and a recessed entrance of white stucco and glass built behind them.
