  1. 1902

A four-storey brick warehouse was built here for the American Milling Company, flour and cereal millers, designed by Henry Geilfuss & Son and joined to the waterfront by a private wharf. The site, bay until the Gold Rush fill, had held saloons, lodgings, a laundry and small storehouses. The fire of 1906 left only its concrete foundations.

National Register of Historic Places nomination, National Park Service
  2. 1907

Built as a meat-packing plant and smokehouse for Armour & Company, the Chicago packer, one of the firms that took the local meat trade after the earthquake: three storeys and a basement of load-bearing brick around heavy timber posts and beams, designed by Henry Geilfuss & Son, across the street from the National Ice & Storage Company's cold stores. Four windowless brick smoking ovens survive on each floor. It is perhaps the only industrial building by Geilfuss left; Armour stayed until about 1934.

  3. 1940

A fire damaged part of the timber framing, which was repaired.

  4. 1944

    V. Traverso Company, wholesale grocers, bought the building as its warehouse and stayed until the firm was dissolved in 1964.

National Register of Historic Places nomination, National Park Service
  5. 1979

Offices were fitted out over 1975 to 1979 with a lift, sprinklers, new stairs and, in 1979, a test kitchen in the basement; the smoking ovens were turned into washrooms, stores and meeting rooms.
