Built around the turn of the century by the owners of the house at 258 Monterey Boulevard — then 230 Sunnyside Avenue — either the Taylor family, owners from 1891 to 1897, or William A. Merralls (1852–1914), an English-born mining engineer and inventor credited with the ventilation of the New York subway, who owned it until 1916. House, conservatory and grounds, seven 25-foot lots, were kept as one garden for over sixty years, until the property was divided about 1970.
