McMorry-Lagan House

1. 1883

   Built by Farrell McMorry to designs by Thomas J. Welsh, architect of the old St. Mary's Cathedral on Van Ness: the Italianate house at 198 Haight, with a mansard roof and some Eastlake detail, and the barn behind it on Laguna Street. The Eastlake house at 188 Haight followed in 1889.

2. April 19, 1906

   During the 1906 fire soldiers from the Presidio fighting it slept in the barn, and the family was ordered out of the houses at 2 a.m. on April 19; the fire was stopped two blocks to the east. Blankets marked "U.S. Army" were still in the barn in 1983.

   At its designation the house was a near-intact late-Victorian interior, held by one family for a century: working gaslights in the upstairs bedrooms, the original kitchen and bath fixtures including a copper bathtub, original carpets, wallpaper and custom furniture, and a barn with its stalls, harness rack and hayloft. The iron roof cresting and 188's porch and false mansard had gone, and 198 had gained terrazzo steps.
