Built as the San Francisco Mint on the crown of Reservoir Hill, where the Spring Valley Water Company's reservoir had been, to a Moderne design by Gilbert Stanley Underwood, Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury. It took over the functions of the Old Mint at Fifth and Mission.
