  1. 1906

The Southern Pacific Company bought the whole block, between Fell, Baker, Hayes and Lyon Streets, for a new hospital for its employees, in what was reported at the time as one of the largest land deals to follow that year's earthquake and fire. Its predecessor, opened in 1898 at Fourteenth and Mission Streets, had burned.

  2. 1908

Built by Healy and Tibbitts Construction Company.

  3. 1908

The first building campaign raised the central five-bay block, the east hyphen and wing, and half the west hyphen: painted brick with stucco-covered concrete trim over a rusticated two-storey base, facing the Panhandle across Fell Street behind four colossal Corinthian columns and a four-tiered stair.

National Register of Historic Places nomination, National Park Service
  4. 1908

A reinforced concrete footbridge was carried from the second floor across the yard to the nurses' annex, on piers high enough for cars to pass beneath.

  5. March 12, 1908

Healy-Tibbitts construction company contracted for foundations, floors, columns and roof slabs on the Southern Pacific hospital for the Southern Pacific company.

    The San Francisco Call, 12 March 1908, p. 15
  6. 1910

The west wing and the rest of the west hyphen were built, finishing the hospital to its original plan — a double back-to-back E around an east–west circulation spine.

National Register of Historic Places nomination, National Park Service
  7. March 4, 1910

John G. Sutton & Co. contracted for the heating, ventilating, plumbing, sewerage, water supply and wiring of the Southern Pacific Company hospital's west wing.

    The San Francisco Call, 4 March 1910, p. 13
  8. 1930

    Harkness Wing

A five-storey reinforced concrete wing with a penthouse went up along Baker Street, designed by Coffey & Rist to match the older elevations but plainer, with a shallow two-storey Ionic porch. Edward S. Harkness, a director of the railroad, paid for it.

  9. 1930

Three tiers of sun porches on the south face of the hyphens, added over the preceding fifteen years in pressed ornamental metal with cast iron posts and railings, were glazed in with Lustraglass, sold for letting ultraviolet light through to convalescents. None of that glazing survives.

National Register of Historic Places nomination, National Park Service
  10. 1953

The decaying pediments over the third-storey windows were taken off.

National Register of Historic Places nomination, National Park Service
  11. 1963

The hospital opened to the general public, after falling railroad employment cut the dues that had paid for it and its parent reorganised into a prepaid health plan and a charitable trust.

National Register of Historic Places nomination, National Park Service
  12. 1968

Renamed Harkness Community Hospital and Medical Center, for the director whose gift had paid for the 1930 wing and to signal that it was no longer only for railroad employees. A seven-year expansion meant to spread over four blocks began the same year.

National Register of Historic Places nomination, National Park Service
  13. 1974

The hospital closed, apparently in bankruptcy, and the expansion planned six years earlier was never built — which is why the complex survives where nearly every comparable San Francisco hospital of its age was replaced.

National Register of Historic Places nomination, National Park Service
  14. December 9, 1976

The former Harkness Hospital buildings, across Fell Street from the Panhandle, stood vacant on a full block; the U.S. Postal Service proposed to demolish them for a 25-foot postal building with 230 parking spaces.

San Francisco City Planning Commission minutes, San Francisco Public Library (Internet Archive)
  15. 1983

Converted to senior housing over 1982 and 1983: partitions out and apartments in, the stripped sun porches reglazed and their ironwork repaired, aluminium sashes replaced to match the historic ones, and the monumental Fell Street stair closed off with reused fencing so that the entrance moved round to the Baker Street portico.
