Jackson Brewing Company barrel washing and beer cooler building

1. 1907

   Built. James T. Ludlow was the constructing engineer for the 1912 brewery.

2. 1912

   The barrel-washing and beer-cooling building was built as three storeys and a basement, iron-framed with brick veneer on its west front laid five stretchers to one header. A wide central pavilion projects slightly, with a round-headed arched doorway at its centre and paired narrow arched windows with brick tympanums either side under a wooden clapboard cornice.

3. 1949

   After the top two storeys came off, leaving the east and south elevations open, they were closed in with corrugated iron walls; these were sheathed in stucco in 1986, and in the mid-1980s the central doorway on the west front was changed from a loading dock to a pedestrian entrance when the building was turned to restaurant use.

    Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of six contributing buildings in the Jackson Brewing Company Historic District, an L-shaped group laid out around the three jobs a brewery does — malting, brewing and bottling — with the malting and brewing ranges parallel either side of a service alley and the bottling house set apart across a yard.
