Tanforan Cottage

   Built.

2. by 1853

   Probably the older of the two Tanforan Cottages, the oldest houses left in the Mission: a building on this site is already on the 1853 Cutts map of the city, and both cottages are on a map of 1859. They are built of local redwood.

3. 1878

   By 1878 the two cottages were numbered 206 and 210 Dolores; they were later renumbered 214 and 220.

4. 1906

   A Victorian fence with pilasters and globes in front of 214 Dolores burned in the 1906 fire and was replaced with a white picket fence.

5. 1952

   The two cottages were sold separately in 1952, after title, unrecorded since the 1906 destruction of records, was established under the McEnerney Act.

6. October 3, 1974

   The lot, 71 feet south of the corner of 15th Street, had 34 feet of frontage on Dolores and depths of 190 and 186 feet, zoned R-4. The cottage was a small one-storey redwood frame house with a false front, shallow porch carried on four square columns, slightly pitched roof and cellar, in a simplified Greek Revival style. 214 Dolores, the older of the pair, was built of first-cut redwood with square nails in clapboard construction, with a later rear sun porch and back stair; a plank walk led to the garden and a greenhouse stood in the rear yard between the two houses. The City Planning Commission unanimously designated the Tanforan Cottage at 214 Dolores Street a city landmark; action on its twin at 220 Dolores was continued a week at that owner's request.

    Listed in the Junior League of San Francisco's Here Today survey of 1968. One of the Tanforan Cottages, San Francisco City Landmark No. 67, and among the oldest residences in the city; it stood on the edge the 1906 fire reached and stopped at.

    Tanforan Cottage #1

    Listed as Tanforan Cottage #1 among the properties in the survey area listed in or formally determined eligible for the National Register and the California Register. With the Mission Dolores chapel and cemetery, the Tanforan Cottages of the 1850s are the oldest buildings in the neighbourhood to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire.

2 expired permits are omitted. The city's statement on early settlement era styles dates the cottage to about 1854 in its landmark list and to somewhere between 1853 and 1866 in its property type description; the assessor's roll gives 1849.
